New talk and speaker added to the schedule

Mon, 17 Mar 2008 14:27:52 -0600
A new talk has been added to the schedule - An Open Source Approach to Digital Humanities

Abstract

The Texas A&M University College of Liberal Arts is working to develop a "telescope of the mind:" a digital research environment based on open standards and a robust open source toolset to allow faculty to create extensive and reusable digital collections capable of advancing research in digital humanities (i.e., the academic semantic web).  This session covers the constraints we are working within and the open source technologies we are applying.  We will also touch on some of the open source packages we are producing.

Bio

James Smith is the inaugural digital humanities lead developer for the College of Liberal Art.  As lead developer, he is spearheading programming efforts as well as providing tutorials, workshops, and other resources to faculty interested in digital humanities.  James received his B.S. in Physics and Mathematics from TAMU in 2001.  He has completed all but thesis for a creative writing M.A. in English.  In his current position, James is an active Perl module developer and can be found most days on #moose and other venues.

Wiki updates

I've updated the Open Source Symposium Wiki with a small bit of information.  If you're attending and you'd like to add your name and bio, please do so.  Let everyone know who they're likely to meet!  I've added my bio (likely to experience several revisions).

Also, don't forget to visit with us in IRC.  #texasoss on Freenode

Registration is now open for the 2008 Open Source Symposium!  Thanks to the generosity of our sponsors, attendance will be free! Although it's free, we still ask that you register. This helps us keep a headcount for conference program guides, shirts, snacks, etc.

To register, please visit the registration page on the site.

Also, don't forget to check out the speaker bios and presentation abstracts!

Tentative schedule posted

Tue, 05 Feb 2008 09:16:52 -0600
Due to the number of talk submissions, we've decided to make a change in the schedule.  The Symposium will now be a single day of talks on Saturday, with some activities on the following Sunday.  We're waiting on final confirmation from a couple of speakers, but a tentative schedule has been posted at http://www.texasoss.org/schedule

The details of activities on Sunday still need to be worked out, but it's been suggested that some demonstrations and/or informal classes be offered.  I'll post information as we work through the details.

CFP Closed, Submitted Topics posted

Thu, 20 Dec 2007 16:36:20 -0600

We've officially closed the Call For Participation and have been reviewing the submissions. I've listed the submission topics on the schedule page. If you didn't get your talk in, or you're finding out about the symposium just now, fear not! With the number of submissions we received, it looks like we may have some flexibility on the second day with the second room. The idea we are looking at is to have the Theater room serve as a sort of "unconference" room. Feel free to post your thoughts or comments.

CFP closing tomorrow

Fri, 14 Dec 2007 16:39:49 -0600
Tomorrow is the last day to get your talk submissions in. If you haven't submitted, please do so. If you have an idea for a talk you'd like to give, but haven't written the talk yet, that's fine too. Just make sure to submit your idea (and then of course put the talk together between now and April). I'll post the talks topics and their abstracts once we close our CFP.  Following that, we'll be working out the schedule and confirming speakers.

I'd like to thank those of you who have submitted talks thus far. We appreciate your time and look forward to meeting you!

CFP Closing soon!

Tue, 11 Dec 2007 11:02:49 -0600

The Call For Participation closes at 11:59p CST on December 15th, 2007 (this Saturday).  If you haven't submitted your proposal for a talk yet, I would encourage you do to so.  Or, if you've already made a submission, but would like to submit another proposal, we would welcome those as well.  Some of the most recent submissions include:

  • Open Source 3D Modeling Software Development with Qt
  • Business Model for Technology Companies
  • How non-programmers can contribute to open source software
  • Turning a Project into a Product
  • An Introduction to Mercurial
  • Open Source takes on Enterprise Management
  • LAMP Stack Apps for K12 ... for all the right  reasons!
  • Hacking the Web

We still need quite a few more "technical" submissions for some of the more advanced attendees.  I know there are several of you Rails, Linux, Python, and Perl guys out there that have given talks at your user group meetings.  Don't be shy, share your talks with the world (or at least the attendees of the Open Source Symposium)!

Three Weeks Left To Submit Your Proposal!

Fri, 23 Nov 2007 21:55:43 -0600
With the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, it's easy to lose track of time (I've done it myself).  Remember to submit your talk proposals by December 15th!  We've received some good proposals, but we have approximately 1140 minutes (that's 19 hours!) of talk time to fill and haven't quite made it yet.  If you're unsure about submitting, I'd like to encourage you to go ahead and submit.  You have plenty of time between now and April to practice at your local user group meeting and perfect your masterpiece.

I look forward to your submissions and hope to meet you in April!
